About
Timm is a Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. He served as Associate Department Head from 2020-2023. Prior to joining Mines, Timm was on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests focus on the development innovative technologies for more sustainable water purification and resource recovery from waste streams. Recent research has focused on development of new technologies for treatment and destruction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) ‘forever chemicals’, including invention of the Hydrothermal Alkaline Treatment (HALT) process for PFAS destruction. Timm was a recent recipient of the Mines Senior Faculty Excellence in Research Award. He has also been the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and his research has been sponsored by DOD, NSF, USEPA, USDA, DOE, the Semiconductor Research Corporation, and the Water Research Foundation. Timm lives in Golden with his wife Stefanie, son Nicholas, and daughter Katherine. In his spare time he enjoys weight training and other fitness activities, reading nonfiction, meditation, and taking advantage of Colorado’s beautiful outdoors.
